Aishwarya Rai to star in Asterix film

Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai is tipped to act in the new Asterix and Obelix film, which has also in the cast martial arts star Jean Claude van Damme.

An entirely new part may be written for the Indian star in the film version of 'Asterix and Obelix at the Olympic Games', which does not have any main female characters.

There is no news about what role would Aishwarya Rai play in the film, which is slated for release in 2007 or 2008 coinciding with the Beijing Olympics.

Asterix fans around the globe will see a new Gaul hero in place of the affable Christian Clavier, who is not returning for the live action film based on the comic book by Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo.

Famous French actor Gerard Depardieu will be back as the mehir-carrying Obelix in the film, which is expected to be his last. Depardieu is reported to be "in the process of stopping filming".

Van Damme will be playing the Roman legionary Gluteus Maximus, who represents Rome at the Games.

The 70-million budget film, which is in the pre-production stage although Uderzo has yet to give his final approval for the project, should have as director Frederic Foresier in place of Alain Chabat. Tunisia and Morocco, the location for the previous film 'Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra', have been chosen for shooting, which is slated to begin next year.

In 'Asterix at the Olympic Games', the Gauls send their heroes to the Olympics while the Romans send legionary Gluteus Maximus. The Roman officials ban the magic potion saying it is an artificial stimulant leaving Asterix and Obelix to compete on their own wits.

The premiere of the Hindi version of 'Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra' is scheduled to be held at the Goa International Film Festival of India (IFFI) on December 3 as part of the beach cinema. The original French film will be screened on December 2. The film's director Alain Chabat and actress Noemie Lenoir, a model for French cosmetics giant L'Oreal, are arriving in Goa next week for the IFFI screenings.

Brad Pitt And Angelina Jolie To Spend Christmas in Malibu

This will be their first official Christmas together

According to late rumors, Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt, his lover, actress Angelina Jolie and their adopted children Maddox and Zahara are spending their Christmas holidays in their Malibu mansion.

Pitt, who recently turned 42, and Jolie, 31, already chose a big Christmas tree where to put their presents to the little children. The shopping lasted fifteen minutes and the happy pair left home in a white Chevy king cab.

This will be their first official Christmas together and probably not their last. Brad and Angelina plan to marry next year, although the sexy actress has still doubts about the wedding.

And, while the two actors are trying to enjoy their relationship, Pitt's ex-wife Jennifer Aniston has launched a veiled attack on him, claiming that his relationship with Angelina Jolie is nothing but a big "mistake"

In an interview regarding her latest movie "Derailed", Aniston used the opportunity to condemn cheating spouses, referring more or less to her own life experience during her marriage with Pitt.

No information about Aniston's holidays were revealed.

USA Today named Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston's split the "most fascinating break-up of 2005" according to a recent study made by the newspaper.

Brad and Jennifer made their beak-up official early this year, but their divorce was finalized in October, after five years of marriage.

Since then, the subject has been top news for magazines all over the world. Now the Hollywood hunk is on the step to wed again, this time with Angelina Jolie, while Aniston is having a great time in the arms of her "The Break-up" co-star, Vince Vaughn.

Number two in the survey made by USA Today newspaper was Charlie Sheen and Denise Richard's short separation, while Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey's split took the third slot.

Le scénario d'un Iran nucléaire

Mieux vaut parler, même à des sourds, que rompre. C'est en vertu de ce vieil adage de la diplomatie, que les responsables de la «troïka» européenne (Berlin, Londres et Paris) se sont rendus hier à Vienne pour reprendre leurs discussions avec les responsables du programme nucléaire iranien. Des discussions dont personne n'attend le moindre développement positif, tant l'Iran du président Mahmoud Ahmadinejab paraît décidé à accéder au rang de puissance nucléaire régionale. Le nouveau négociateur de Téhéran, Ari Larijani, ne vient-il pas de mentionner le cas de la Corée du Nord, qui louvoie avec habileté depuis 1994 tout en poursuivant ses efforts pour se doter d'armes nucléaires et de missiles capables de les transporter, comme l'exemple à suivre ?

Un seul fait suffit à illustrer l'embarras des Européens : les discussions avaient été interrompues avec l'Iran au mois dernier, après que Téhéran a repris, malgré ses engagements antérieurs, le processus de conversion de l'uranium, étape préalable à son enrichissement et indispensable à la militarisation nucléaire. Or, rien n'a changé, depuis lors, dans le comportement de Téhéran. Bien au contraire, si l'on en juge par quelques informations des derniers mois. N'a-t-on pas appris, au cours des dernières semaines que Téhéran avait repoussé une offre de Moscou consistant à procéder à l'enrichissement de l'uranium iranien dans des installations russes avant d'en contrôler l'usage qu'en ferait le régime des mollahs ? Que l'Iran s'apprêtait, malgré les timides mises en garde de l'Agence internationale de l'énergie atomique (AIEA), à «convertir» cinquante tonnes supplémentaires d'uranium ? Que l'Iran vient de tester avec succès un missile Shahab de troisième génération, construit avec l'aide de la Corée du Nord, pouvant atteindre aussi bien Ankara que Karachi, Tel-Aviv que Riyad ? Que l'Iran s'était procuré, dès 1987, grâce à la filière pakistanaise, des «recettes» permettant de fabriquer certains éléments de l'arme nucléaire, notamment le moulage et l'usinage de demi-sphères d'uranium métal dont on devine aisément l'usage ?

Cette date lointaine (1987) suffit à rappeler que les ambitions nucléaires de Téhéran ne remontent pas à quelques années. En fait, c'est la seule partie du programme de modernisation de feu le shah d'Iran que l'imam Khomeiny ait repris à son compte. Mais ce dossier prend aujourd'hui une dimension d'autant plus critique que le président Ahmadinejab a multiplié depuis plusieurs semaines les provocations. Cela a commencé lors de l'Assemblée générale des Nations unies, lorsque Mahmoud Ahmadinejab, fraîchement entré en fonction, a prononcé un discours extrêmement dur après avoir imploré le retour du Mahdi, «l'imam caché», disparu en 941 et qui doit revenir pour instaurer la société islamique idéale. Et s'est poursuivi fin octobre lorsqu'il a demandé qu'Israël soit «rayé de la carte du monde» et que «quiconque reconnaît Israël brûle dans les flammes de la colère de son propre peuple». Quelques jours plus tard, après avoir procédé à une purge de la haute fonction publique et du personnel diplomatique, le président qualifiait l'Etat hébreu de «tumeur», donnant raison aux révisionnistes qui mettent en cause la réalité de l'Holocauste et suggérant de transférer «le régime sioniste» en Allemagne ou en Autriche. Une apologie de la théorie du choc des civilisations, «bataille historique qui a commencé il y a des centaines d'années entre le monde de l'arrogance mondiale et le monde de l'islam».

Cette claire violation de la Charte des Nations unies (menacer un pays membre d'anéantissement) n'a valu jusqu'à présent à l'Iran que des condamnations indignées de la part des Occidentaux, la discrète réprobation de Moscou et le silence des capitales arabes, dont plusieurs (l'Egypte et la Jordanie) ont pourtant reconnu l'existence d'Israël et ont été ouvertement vouées aux gémonies par Mahmoud Ahmadinejab. Tant de prudence, confirmée par les hésitations des Européens à déférer l'Iran devant le Conseil de sécurité pour la violation de ses engagements en matière nucléaire, ne peut que confirmer le président ultraconservateur dans des positions extrémistes qui devraient, selon lui, étouffer le mécontentement de la population iranienne.

Le président, en effet, n'a pu tenir aucune des promesses sociales et démagogiques de sa campagne et cherche manifestement, par la surenchère nationalistiquo-religieuse, à faire taire ses opposants. Il y est d'autant plus enclin, qu'il estime (à raison) que le contexte international lui est favorable : empêtrés en Irak, les Etats-Unis, malgré les discours guerriers de certains néoconservateurs, savent fort bien que Téhéran peut encore leur compliquer la tâche par ses connexions avec la communauté chiite. L'Iran dispose d'autre part de la même capacité de nuisance au Liban, via le Hezbollah. Autres atouts précieux en cas de saisie du Conseil de sécurité : les demandes énergétiques, notamment de la part de la Chine et de l'Inde, mettent Téhéran à l'abri d'éventuelles sanctions économiques occidentales. Et l'Iran peut toujours compter sur la compréhension de Moscou, grand fournisseur d'armes et de d'équipement nucléaire. Suite probable du scénario : un Iran nucléaire qui incitera l'Arabie Saoudite et l'Egypte à suivre la même voie et une intrusion, via Israël qui dispose déjà de l'armement nucléaire, de la dissuasion dans tout le Moyen-Orient. Car le programme nucléaire iranien paraît trop avancé, dispersé et camouflé dans des installations souterraines, pour faire l'objet d'une attaque préventive du genre de celle menée en 1981 par Israël contre le réacteur irakien Osirak.

En unissant en un seul les royaumes Mède et Perse, Cyrus II fut le fondateur de l'Iran unifié et de l'Empire perse. Ses qualités personnelles d'homme politique et de stratège assurèrent à sa dynastie, les Achéménides, la domination sur tout le Proche-Orient.

Par sa mère, Mandane, et sa femme, Amytis, Cyrus se rattachait aux rois mèdes d'Ecbatane, et par son père, Cambyse I er , aux Achéménides. Celui qui devait être le fondateur de la puissance perse succéda v.ers 558 à son père comme roi d'Anzan, territoire vassal du roi Astyage de Médie. Exploitant l'unité de ses tribus nomades ou sédentaires, Cyrus triompha de son suzerain, en 555, et se proclama roi des Mèdes et des Perses. En Médie, Ecbatane continua néanmoins à jouer son rôle de capitale et les fonctionnaires mèdes furent maintenus.

On peut en effet déceler déjà chez le souverain la volonté de constituer l'unité d'un empire sur la base d'une intégration et d'une coexistence avec les pays conquis. L'originalité de l'Empire perse et sa durée reposeront, pour une large part, sur la sauvegarde des particularismes administratifs, juridiques ou religieux des pays soumis. Maître de l' Assyrie, de l'Ourartou (actuelle Arménie) et du plateau anatolien, Cyrus isola la Lydie, la coupant de ses alliés éventuels, Babyloniens et Egyptiens. Il obtint pacifiquement la vassalité de la Cilicie mais se heurta au refus du roi lydien Crésus d'accepter tout compromis.

La défaite de Crésus
Après plusieurs échecs militaires, Cyrus s'empara de Harran et affronta la cavalerie lydienne, désemparée par les chameaux de l'armée perse. Crésus, réfugié à Sardes, sa capitale, se donnera la mort durant le siège, en 546. La Lydie devint une satrapie gouvernée par un Perse. Ce fut ensuite au tour des villes grecques du littoral, jugées trop neutres dans le conflit, d'être assiégées puis vaincues, à l'exception de Milet, qui accepta la reddition sans combattre. Ces villes, enrichies par le négoce, réservoirs d'hommes pour la guerre, assuraient aussi la possession de la côte égéenne dont les ports, au débouché des grandes routes qui traversent l'Iran, permettaient une liaison avec le monde grec.

En politique plus qu'en militaire, Cyrus avait su exploiter l'incapacité des villes grecques à mener une politique commune, tout en s'y assurant l'appui des riches marchands.

L'occupation de Babylone
Devenu maître de l'Asie Mineure, Cyrus marcha contre la dynastie chaldéenne de Babylone au moment même où les conflits suscités par la politique religieuse de Nabonide mettaient en difficulté ce dernier. C'est en libérateur que Cyrus se présenta, en 539, devant Babylone, laissée sans défense. Il y fut acclamé tant par les Juifs, auxquels il permit (édit de 537) de regagner la Palestine et de reconstruire le temple de Jérusalem, que par les Babyloniens, qui abandonnèrent les divinités étrangères introduites par Nabonide et rétablirent officiellement les cultes traditionnels de Baal, Mardouk et Nabo. Bien que le monothéisme iranien ne s'exprima vraiment que sous Darius, une telle tolérance religieuse est à relever car elle s'inscrit dans la problématique politique de Cyrus.

La volonté de Cyrus fut de fonder un empire cohérent que seuls la diplomatie, la tolérance en matière religieuse et politique, l'intégration des particularismes et un esprit magnanime permettaient de constituer. L'institution de l'araméen comme langue administrative officielle et sa diffusion dans tout l'Empire relèvaient de cette volonté. Mais avant même d'avoir pu doter son royaume de structures véritables, Cyrus mourut dans des circonstances mal connues, vers 530, sur les marches orientales de l'Empire où il avait repris les opérations militaires contre les nomades. C'est dans une certaine mesure leur irréductibilité qui mit en échec la ruse et la diplomatie du conquérant et assigna un terme symbolique au règne du «Grand Roi» et «Roi juste», enterré à Pasargades.

Osama bin Laden's niece, in an interview with GQ magazine in which she appears scantily clad, says she has nothing in common with the al-Qaida leader and simply wants acceptance by Americans.

"Everyone relates me to that man, and I have nothing to do with him," Wafah Dufour, the daughter of bin Laden's half brother, Yeslam Binladin, says in the January edition of the magazine, referring to the al-Qaida leader.

"I want to be accepted here, but I feel that everybody's judging me and rejecting me," said the California-born Dufour, a law graduate who lives in New York. "Come on, where's the American spirit? Accept me. I want to be embraced, because my values are like yours. And I'm here. I'm not hiding."

Dufour, who adopted her mother's maiden name after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks that have been blamed on bin Laden, appears in several provocative photos in the magazine.

The pictures are likely to be considered obscene by conservative Muslims in and outside of Saudi Arabia where women are required to be veiled.

Asked if she would like to perform her music in the Middle East, Dufour says her mother, Carmen Dufour, would be too afraid that "someone would want to kill me."

"Listen, I would love to raise consciousness. Maybe women could hear the songs and realize that I'm doing my dream and hopefully they can, too," she said.

Yeslam and Osama are among 54 children of the late Saudi construction magnate Mohammed bin Laden and his 22 wives. The extended family includes several hundred people.

Binladin, who received Swiss citizenship in 2001, has condemned his half brother "for his acts and his convictions." He intentionally spells his name differently from his half brother.

In the interview, Dufour says she would not date a fundamentalist Muslim and that she cried hysterically when she witnessed the attacks on New York while staying with her mother in Geneva.

C'est le genre d'interview que l'on a peu coutume de lire. Sans tabou, directe, musclée. Il n'y avait guère que Nicolas Sarkozy pour s'y risquer, dans Libération. Et le résultat est musclé. Au cours d'un échange assez vif avec trois journalistes du quotidien, le ministre de l'Intérieur s'insurge contre "la pensée unique qui est intolérable", regrettant qu'on ne puisse "plus rien dire" sans être "immédiatement accusé de pensées nauséabondes ". " C'est la pensée unique qui est intolérable", affirme le président de l'UMP.

" Vous osez dire que je devrais avoir honte ? "

Alors qu'on lui demandait s'il était "extrémiste" ou s'il n'avait "pas honte" de sa manière de réagir aux événements, le numéro deux du gouvernement a répliqué : "Je suis un républicain scrupuleux, sans doute moins sectaire que vous". "Comment pouvez-vous dire une chose aussi outrancière, alors que j'ai été le ministre de l'Intérieur qui a connu 25 nuits d'émeutes, et qu'à la différence de tous les pays qui ont connu ça, il n'y a eu ni morts ni blessés graves", a demandé le ministre de l'Intérieur. "Depuis quatre ans, j'ai porté des débats qui, dans nombre de cas, étaient en opposition frontale avec les thèses du Front national", a-t-il ajouté en rappelant qu'il avait défendu les quotas d'immigrés, la discrimination positive, le vote des étrangers aux municipales, la suppression de la double peine. "J'ai dit que l'Islam était une grande religion de France, qu'elle devait être représentée dans le cadre des institutions de la République", a-t-il également rappelé. "Et vous osez dire que je devrais avoir honte ? C'est vous qui devriez avoir honte de poser une question aussi contraire à l'objectivité la plus élémentaire", a ajouté le ministre.

Sarkozy répond à Thuram, Debbouze et Starr

Alors que plusieurs stars, comme le rappeur Joey Starr et le comédien Jamel Debouzze, ont récemment lancé un appel aux jeunes de banlieues pour qu'ils s'inscrivent sur les listes électorales, le ministre est une nouvelle fois direct : "Je ne reconnais aucun titre à Joey Starr, compte tenu de son passé, ni à Jamel Debbouze de me donner des leçons de droits de l'homme ou de respect des autres" (...) "Nous pouvons comparer nos bilans". Et Lilian Thuram ? " Je le plains de pouvoir être si caricatural, répond Sarkozy. C'est un grand footballeur, ce n'est pas encore un maître à penser " (...) " Monsieur Thuram, il y a bien longtemps qu'il n'est pas allé dans les banlieues. Il vit en Italie, avec un salaire qui le regarde" (...) "je connais un peu mieux ce qui se passe dans les banlieues françaises" que Thuram. Le footballeur l'avait accusé de jouer le jeu du Front national.

Nicolas Sarkozy a également dénoncé "l'amalgame" employé par l'association Act up qui a fait apposer sur les murs de Paris une photo le représentant avec le slogan: "Votez Le Pen". "Cette affiche est directement inspirée des méthodes du Front national", a-t-il affirmé. Enfin, à la question : "Pensez-vous comme Eric Raoult (ndlr: député UMP) que Clichy-sous-Bois 'fait honte à notre pays'", le ministre a répondu : "Non".

گویشهای ابداعی و تاثير آن بر زبان فارسی: دو دیدگاه متفاوت

مسئله دخالت زبانهای عاميانه و ابداعی در زبان رسمی ايران موضوع بحث برانگيزی است که همواره مايه نگرانی بسياری از اديبان واهل زبان در کشور بوده است.

نگرانی که اخيرا با پخش برنامه های تلوزيونی همچون سريال جنجال برانگيز شبهای برره بالا گرفته است. به عنوان نمونه برره ای ها به شعر گفتن می گويند "شعر در کردن"، به اظهار عشق کردن می گويند "از خود عشق در کردن" و يا اينکه "پاچه خواری" در اين گويش به معنی زبان بازی و تملق گويی است.

برخی از اديبان زبان فارسی، هر نوع نفوذ کلمات و يا عبارات عاميانه و ابداعی را تهديدی عليه زبان فارسی رسمی می دانند که می تواند باعث فساد زبان شود.

در حالی که ديگران چنين نگرانی را بی مورد دانسته و معتقدند که زبان اصولا سير طبيعی خود را طی می کند و خود مردم قيم اصلی آن هستند.

در زير می توانيد دو ديدگاه متفاوت را در باره ورود اين نوع گويشها به زبان روزمره مردم بخوانيد و نظر خود را به ما بگوييد:

ادبا اين اختيار را ندارند که بگويند کدام کلمه عاميانه است و اجازه ورود به زبان رسمی را ندارد. بلکه اين مردم هستند که در سير طبيعی کاربرد زبان، کلمات مورد نياز خود را حفظ می کنند

به گمان من اين نگرانی بيهوده است. زبان هميشه از جانب مردم بکار می رود و زبانی که مردم بکار می برند تحول خودش را بطور طبيعی سير می کند. زبان در سير تحول طبيعی اش آنچه را که مورد نياز خود می داند جذب و آنچه را که زايد می داند دفع می کند. ادبا اين اختيار را ندارند که بگويند کدام کلمه عاميانه است و اجازه ورود به زبان رسمی را ندارد. بلکه اين مردم هستند که در سير طبيعی کاربرد زبان، کلمات مورد نياز خود را حفظ می کنند و کلماتی هم که واقعا مورد نياز نيست به مرور زمان دفع و از حوزه لغوی زبان خارج می شود.

اين نگرانی اخير هم که موجبش يک سريال تلوزيونی (شبهای برره) بوده، به عقيده من از همين قبيل نگرانی هاست. در کشورهای مختلف، سازندگان سريالهای تلويزيونی ، بخصوص سريالهايی که جنبه سرگرم کننده و هزل آميز دارد، دست به ابتکارات مختلفی می زنند که يکی از آن ابتکارات، بازی با زبان است.

همانطوری که ترانه سراها گاهی در ترانه هايشان دست به ابداع زبانی می زنند که هيچ نوع اصالتی ندارد، طبيعی است که سازندگان سريالها هم، مخصوصا سريالهايی که جنبه کمدی دارد، زبانی را برای خود ابداع کنند که نه از جهت صرف و نحو (گرامر) و نه از نظر صورت شناسی (مورفولوژی) مصداقی در زبانهای ايرانی ندارد. يعنی نه در زبان رسمی و نه در زبانهای اقوام مختلف کرد، لر، بلوچ و يا ترک. اين مسئله به هيچ وجه باعث فساد زبان رسمی نمی شود.

زبان رسمی همين زبانی است که در سراسر ايران با آن گفتگو می کنند، می نويسند، می خوانند و در مدارس تدريس می کنند. به هر حال مجموعا از نظر من اين پديده های زبانی که در يک دوره هايی وارد زبان می شود و در حد مکالمه بکار ميرود و بعد هم محو می شود يا به زندگی خود ادامه می دهد، چيزی نيست که موجب نگرانی اديبان ما يا اهل زبان و پاسداران زبان فارسی را فراهم کند.

در اين روزگار که روزگار گسترش رسانه هاست، زبانهای بومی و يا اگر فراختر بنگريم، فرهنگها، از هر سوی آماج تازشهای گوناگون قرار گرفته است و نيرومند ترين زبانها نيز می توانند در برابر اين تازشها از پای درآيند.

زبان پارسی، زبان نيرومندی است که در درازنای تاريخ ايران نشان داده است که به آسانی نمی توان آن را آسيب رساند و به بی راهه در انداخت. اما با اين همه، در اين روزگار که روزگار گسترش رسانه هاست، زبانهای بومی و يا اگر فراختر بنگريم، فرهنگها، از هر سوی آماج تازشهای گوناگون قرار گرفته است و نيرومند ترين زبانها نيز می توانند در برابر اين تازشها از پای درآيند.

رسانه به تيغی دو دم می ماند که کارکردی دوگانه و ناساز می تواند داشته باشد.اگر از رسانه به شايستگی بهره ببريم، می توانيم زبانها و فرهنگهای بومی را مايه ور تر بگردانيم و در برابر گزندها و آسيبها استوارتر و آسيب ناپذيرتر. اما اگر رسانه بدرستی بکار برده نشود، می تواند گزندهای سهمگين و حتی جبران ناپذيری برساند.

من بر آنم که برنامه هايی مانند (شبهای) برره در کوتاه زمان، آسيبی به زبان فارسی نخواهد رساند اما اگر ساخته شدن اين برنامه ها و بکار گرفتن زبانهای برساخته و نا ساز با هنجارها و کار و سازهای زبان فارسی به روندی در رسانه ها تبديل شود و واژه هايی که می سازند پی در پی به کار رود، اين در درازمدت می تواند به زبان پارسی آسيب برساند. از اين روی رسانه ها هنگامی که با زبان يا با هر پديده ای که کارکرد فرهنگی دارد روبرو هستند، می بايد بسيار سنجيده و انديشيده رفتار کنند.

اگر مردم خود واژه ها را برگزينند، به سخن ديگر نيروهای بيرون زبانی در کار نباشد، بهترين واژه ها را خواهند برگزيد. زيرا زبان راستين را بايد از مردم شنيد و بدست آورد. ايرانيان نشان داده اند که اگر بر پايه پسند خود واژه بسازند، بهترين واژه ها را خواهند ساخت. واژه هايی که با هنجار های گوناگون زبان شناختی سازگار است.

اما اگر اين پسند و توان واژه سازی مردمی به ياری اين رسانه ها، به بيراهه کشانده شود، واژه هايی که مردم می سازند واژه هايی شايسته نيست.مردم اگر واژه ها را از رسانه ها بستانند، خود واژه نمی سازند، پس بيشينه کار با رسانه هاست. اين رسانه ها هستند که می بايد واژه های سنجيده و درست و به اندام بسازند تا مردم آنها را بکار بگيرند.

The prime minister's political advisors have been keen to stress that he's still running the government and that there's no question of him resigning. But there's little chance that the issue of Ariel Sharon's health will now go away. Many of today's headlines focus on the new alliance with France. The Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper writes "Poland teams up with France against stingy Great Britain". Just two weeks ago, it adds, the Polish Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz, told his British counterpart Tony Blair in London, that Poland considers the UK its closest European ally. Now the paper's main headline reads, "We love the French again".

The u-turn is particularly surprising because Warsaw and Paris fell out badly over the war in Iraq which Poland supported. Then the French President Jacques Chirac said Poland had missed a good opportunity to shut up. Calling the alliance "a spectacular change of strategy", the Rzeczpospolita broadsheet prints a translation of the joint letter the Polish and French foreign ministers sent to Thursday's Financial Times newspaper. That letter said Britain had championed EU enlargement and it should be prepared to cover its costs.

Elsewhere, a prominent opposition politician , Jan Rokita, says the government shouldn't be afraid of vetoing the budget if Poland is offered less than the 60 billion euros on the table six months ago.

The advent of computerised share trading has opened up traditionally-exclusive stock markets, making them more accessible to ordinary investors and making the process of buying and selling shares much faster for professional brokers. Now Mizuho Securities in Japan has discovered that there's a down side to all this.

Under instruction from one of its clients to sell a single share in a Japanese recruitment company at the market price of 610,000 yen, or around 5,000 dollars, one of its brokers made what may be the most expensive typing error in history. Instead the order went out to sell 610,000 shares, more than 40 times the total number of shares in the company, at a price of just one yen each. Mizuho spotted their mistake in less than two minutes but it was too late. The sale had already been authorised and sharp-eyed online investors began snapping up the non-existent shares at bargain prices.

Mizuho, which failed to own up to the mistake for several hours, is now trying to buy back all the shares at something close to the price it sold them for, but it admits it will lose at least 220 million dollars.

The government has demanded an inquiry into how the stock exchange's computer system failed to spot such an obviously nonsensical trade. Mizuho has cancelled its annual office party and there will presumably be fewer Christmas bonuses this year as well.

The only emblems recognised under the Geneva Conventions are the red cross and the red crescent. On the battlefield or in disaster zones the thinking goes: these two clearly symbolise neutral humanitarian relief and should not be compromised by lots of other emblems.

But Israel rejects the cross and the crescent, it's Magen David Adom Society uses the unrecognised red star of David. That means the society is not a full member of the Red Cross movement. America has been withholding its subscriptions to the International Red Cross in protest at the exclusion. Arab states meanwhile, will not accept the star of David as a neutral symbol in a war zone.

The only solution is a third emblem, a red diamond on a white background, it has no cultural or religious significance. After intense negotiations, Israel says it will use the diamond outside its internationally recognised borders. But the new emblem still has to be approved. Although a majority of countries are in favour, some Arab states are apparently not convinced that Israel needs to be accommodated in this way. The debate in Geneva may be heated.

In a BBC interview, the Spanish environment minister, Cristina Narbona, admitted that that was an embarrassment. We're all a bit ashamed, she said - much more needs to be done in Spain and across Europe. True to political form, she put the blame for Spain's dismal performance on the former government which left office last year. She spoke of the need for new ecological taxes, a rise in the price of electricity and a cultural revolution in the way companies and private citizens use energy.

She said the Spanish prime minister, Jose Luis Zapatero, was personally committed to the climate change agenda. But environmentalists warn that unless political leaders act on their promises , Spain and the EU in general will fail to meet their Kyoto targets by 2012.

You can not change history

In response to Mordechai Kedar's "Nucleotheism":

State of Israel gives a new meaning to the word Perversion. With all the peace that state of Israel brings to Middle East in general and to Palestine in particular, it is only human to reciprocate. Just like the Palestinian suicide bombers, the Mullahs are but a perverted response to a perverted world state of affairs.

Mr. Mordechai in true colors of a Messianic Zionist wants us to believe that the Mullahs are motivated by concept he phrases as "Wilayat al-Faqih". To the contrary, the truth is much simpler. The Mullahs are motivated by one principal and that is "Self preservation". They will do what it takes to preserve their status. As I recall in the 80s, they did not have any problems going through back doors to negotiate arm deals with who ever provided it.

I like many people, I hope to see justice for Palestinian people. The Mullahs bank on this sentiment to rally people in their support. Though, I do not support this regime, I do think it is the best that Iran can come up with at this time. It takes a "Rend" like a Mullah to deal with "Rend like Zionist".

What than motivates a Zionist to acquire 200 nuclear war heads. Well let's see, the principle motivation is Messianic and cloaked in democracy and freedom. 1. Iran lives in a very dangerous neighborhood. These American leaders don't hear or see anything unless zionsists tell them it happened, precisely because their heads are stuck in their asses!

2. As the history of 8 year war with saddam shows, unless iran is self sufficient and powerful, it does not matter whose weapons it has bought. When it needs them, they can say "no". It does not matter what the "contract" says, we just won't give it to you, as the US government did during the 8 year war.

3. Iran is a country with lots of potential and opportunities, very smart and hard working people. Unlike the arabics and the zionsists, it is very forward looking, and not backward looking. It needs the technology and the power to be able to materialize those potentials, create job opportunities for its youth, and have nukes so that noone can even think of attacking it. Zionists specially threaten Iran every 3-6 months. They should be put in their seats..

4. That "World" that is "gainst" Iran in its nuclear quest is not really after iran's interest, and not even interested in its existance. Don't forget Iran is under economic sanctions by the "most powerful" nation on earth!!!!. Why should iranians care what they say? Again you remeber the 8 year war? Women pioneers of Iranian aviation

On Farah Ravon photo essay of funeral for pioneer aviator Sadighe Dowlatshahi, "Flying high":

I was very saddened to hear that Ghodsieh (Sadigheh) Dowlatshahi has passed away. Now, unfortunately, all the three brave women pioneers of Iranian aviation, who made history, have passed away. Only few days ago I learned that Ina Avshid has died only few months earlier, on March 31 of this year. Effat Tejaratchi, the other member of the trio, died in 1999.

I had the pleasure of visiting Sadigheh Dowlatshahi early September, 2002, just few days before my article about Iranian women pilots was published in Iranian.com. What an interesting multi talented lady, a pioneer in many respects. About the same time that she was attracted to flying, she was involved with sports too. She was telling that at young ages, she used to participate in bicycle racing with boys. At 90, she was extremely lively and energetic. Being very sociable, and popular, attended most local gatherings in Toronto and used to drive around on her own.

Later when she wrote me a note with some pictures she sent me, I also noticed her beautiful hand writing. Here are couple of pictures (1) (2) I took of her, at her home in Toronto.

May her soul rest in peace.

You need to get rid of Siamack Baniameri. His writing, if we can call it that, offers nothing at all, is not funny and strives to be shocking while sounding like a tired frat boy at 4am on a Saturday morning after getting completely obliterated. What do you consider he offers? He makes Iranians look like posers. He is utterly annoying. Does he think he is some cute 10 year old boy amusing his mom's friends?

Raised in toxic environment

On Guive Mirfendereski's "The Ahmadinejad in us":

I read with curiosity and dismay the article written by Mr Mirfendereski who seems to love to pretend being an encyclopedia (these days just about anyone who is familiar with Google can write such articles about anything). I think a clarification is due since the article claimed to represent a whole national culture.

About the author's "childhood impression" of "... the predominant Iranian culture is profoundly anti Jewish" I am just dumbfounded. I for one and thousands of those that I have personally known in my life in Iran are far from this kind of feelings (and I am a grandson of an ayatollah).

I believe either 1) this gentleman has suffered a bad upbringing (no offense or getting too personal here, but son of a father who was a diplomat in Shah's regime would be exposed to limited and special encounters rather than real people and real world) like having been raised in such a toxic environment perhaps mixed with the impressions induced by his teachers ("[he] attended a school managed by Catholic priests...." ), or 2) ... I can't think of anything else than I am from Mars!

The article is not well researched in technical terms either "... audience before Ayatollah Khamenei, Ahmadinejad described how when he was addressing the United Nations General Assembly in New York that he felt an aura of light surrounded him ....", that statement was made in a meeting with Ayatollah Javadi Amoli.

Dogmatic 'republicanism'

On Hassan Behgar's "Benaame etehaad baraaye tafragheh: Iranian opposition's meeting for unity in Berlin brings more discord":

Dear Hassan Behgar:

I am disappointed about widespread skepticism and ongoing mistrust between opposition groups. While all opposition groups share similar concerns and interests, misconceptions and misunderstandings are the source of social mistrust and ensuing lack of cooperation between democratic forces.

I would like to highlight the fact that Reza Pahlavi, in contrast to public misperception even from pro-monarchist groups, never uses the title 'prince' or 'crown prince'. He is first and foremost a public figure, a former crown prince, with academic credentials (BA in Political Science), and a distinguished record of over 26 years of opposition to ruling theocracy in Iran. Reza Pahlavi is a recognized Iranian opposition leader in exile who tries his best to unite opposition forces. His first concern is to bring about democracy to Iran through non-violence.

Reza Pahlavi's views are well documented on his website www.rezapahlavi.org and in his book Winds of Change. I urge my compatriots to do more research and read his book before publishing biased opinions. The Farsi version of Reza Pahlavi's Book Winds of Change is available on www.todayonlyunity.com.

At this critical moment in our nations' history, every Iranian bears a personal responsibility to overcome past differnces and hatred, forgive enemies, and reach the hand of friendship towards to pave the path towards democracy. Interestingly, many opposition groups share the desire for peaceful transition from theocracy to democracy. Nevertheless, they find it difficult to overcome historic differences.

I urge you and every Iranian to avoid dogmatic discussions on 'republicanism' vs 'constitutional monarchy', individual leaders, and past heros. Let us focus on the bigger picture: 'Secular Democracy in Iran with free, fair and transparent elections, and a referendum on the future system of governance'. A democratic Iran must be home to people from all walks of live, all ethnic, political and religious groups.

To this end, I urge all (nearly 300) Iranian opposition groups and parties to realign their position along moderate centrist ideas, and form a united coalition of democratic parties to defeat the ruling theocratic government in Iran. I salute the efforts of Reza Pahlavi, all political groups from left and right to join forces and overcome past differences. Let us remember: We can only strength in unity.

As a Bahai though I would additionally claim and cling to my right to dignity and self-respect.

After having seen nude pictures of porno star Persia de Carlo posted next to that of Prof. Bushrui's and the Prince of Wales', momentarily the foundations of my belief in Iranian.com were shaken and I wavered upon making any further future contributions.

Obviously no-one who has put great effort and enthusiastically brought to pen his thoughts and meditations and written an article would want to find himself or herself discredited by readers the way I felt I was. I believe contributors to your site and readers alike would appreciate a more considerate categorization of postings which would be viewed as a refinement of an already fine work. A rough classification discourages more weighty contributors who would perhaps vacillate before forwarding their works to Iranian.com. We choose our readers the way we choose our friends.

I have no aim of criticizing your hard work. Your site is too lofty and divine to be overshadowed by critics and any attempts would end up in failure. Furthermore, I will continue visiting Iranian.com, share its contents with others and encourage more people to visit it.

to whom this may concerm: i have been a dedicated viewer of iranian.com for several years now. i was just viewing the iranian of the day section and found myself absolutely shocked and outraged that you would feature a porn star as iranian of the day AND put her porn shots on the site. there are many respectable people who visit the website, not to mention teenagers and children, who would feel disappointed to see what i've seen. please take her pictures off or at least block her naked images. this would be what an honorable publication would do.

A few night s ago I was struggling to piece together my scattered thoughts about the IRI president Ahmadinejad. When I went to spell check, Word highlighted his name an offered no suggestion about a correction except to ask what I intended to do with this name for future reference. First, my impulse was to click on "Add" as I have a nagging suspicion that this guy will be around. Then maybe not. So I chose the best alternative "Ignore." It dawns on me that perhaps the best antidote to his poisonspeak is ignoring him altogether. Like a child in tantrum, the more attention he gets the more monstrous he may become.

Please somebody tell this idiot, Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad, why is it that a very recent world event which has been audibly and visually recorded, taped, and written about and witnessed by sores of survivors a "myth" and yet a bunch of mumbo-jumbo crap nonsense about a bunch of rag-head Arabs ( i.e., the 12 Emams and the gang grazing the deserts of the Mideast) injected into the brains of the uneducated Muslim masses by the Akhoonds is the "absolute truth" and everyone must abide by?

Are there any documented and valid data on the Ashoora and Tasooa event!? Now, that's not a "myth!"

True religion is anything but convenient

On Sasan Seifkar's poem, "What do you believe?":

Dear Sasan,

I liked your poem very much. It does exactly what poetry is meant to do: make the reader reflect upon their experiences or way of looking at the world. It did that for me, and my conclusion was this: I disagree with its portrayal of religion as "comforting" or "simple."

I'm not a dogmatic religious man myself. I do not believe in other dimensions where the bad burn for eternity and the good play harps in the clouds. Additionally, I agree that too many "religious" people use religions to make themselves feel better at the expense of others with the age-old conviction, "I am saved, and those who do not think as I do are damned."

At the same time, I truly respect those who are deeply religious and don't use their religion as an excuse to justify a feeling of self-righteousness or superiority. Believing that one's actions determine for eternity whether one will enjoy bliss or suffer beyond imagining is anything but "cozy homelike comfort."

I watch my religious friends cope with the daily struggle to determine what is right or wrong. True religion is anything but convenient. Is it comforting or easy to be celibate until marriage, abstain from alcohol or tobacco, go to the church, mosque, temple, or synagogue every week or every day? Is the belief that one mistake in life can lead to an eternity of pain convenient? I do not ask you to believe in a religion, but I ask you to respect those that pursue it with honesty and sincerity.

Also, I realize you have the qualifier "most" when making these generalizations about religious people, but your poem places the blame on religion itself. I hold no respect for those that use their so-called "religion" to trample on others, and I share your disappointment that so many people use religion as an emotional band-aid, but i do not blame religion. When scientists invent newer, more horrific weapons, do we blame the scientists or Science itself? I think it silly to blame religion for the actions or attitudes of those that abuse it.

Once again, I enjoyed your poem for the thought it provokes, though I disagree with one aspect of its message. Thank you for writing it.

Though I understand your position (iranian .com) with regards to publishing what you receive and the flexibility needed in such profession, I can not understand the lack of research / investigation in what the writer's gender is. This story would have had a completely different influence if known to have been written by a man.

Today I was appalled by one of the writings posted on your site, "Experimental" by Shana Yazdi. What was this low grade noncreative pornographic piece doing in there?? Was this an attempt to attract more readers? Are you changing the guidelines for iranian.com? Last but not least, I wonder what would your beloved mother say in her eloquent words if she saw this "Shana Yazdi" article on your website?!

Could you define your audience through iranian.com? Not only I have been considering to post my writings on your site, as my friends are, I also need to know because I'm a parent encouraging her kids to write and post on your site and surely you can relate to my considerations. Do you suggest I should expand my parental supervision to your site as well?!

Psychology 101 would help you to know that this story is a fake! If you don't feel like analyzing , then give the story to any psychiatrist (actually any boy or girl with good common sense will do the job) and expect the following analysis about the author of the fake article:

Who wrote it and why? A 35-45 years old Iranian woman living in the USA, single and angry at single men. She is actually hates men , she has some masochist desires very similar to what she described in her story ( particularly rough anal sex). At the same time she probably hates intercourse (because she hates men). She is horny, yet inapproachable. the Iranian community has presented many of these gifts to the world!

I wonder why did you publish the story. yes, I am talking about you Mr. Iranian.com. Mr. Jahanshah. What is unsettling you? Why are so MARD_SETIZ ? Ar eyou naive enough to believe that story? You can not tell me you bought that story. You can not. Or maybe you did. After all you have a history of ideological attachment: socialism, Islamic radicalism, now liberalism and feminism.

Let me tell you something about male feminists: Other than politicians who follow their political goals, other feminists are often in two categories: One group consists of young males who are afraid of women and are so needy at the same time. This group thinks that by being a pathetic feminist they can get some female companionship. Therefore, fear and need is the motive of the first male feminist group.

The second group of male feminists are those who are trapped in awful marriages and are totally powerless with their family. This second group hates other men, specially those men who happily and proudly are regarded as heads of their family. In other words, pure jealousy is the motive of the second male feminist.

Dehumanizing Iranian men

On Mina Azadparast article about marrying off young Iranian girls to men living abroad, "Darse ebrat":

The writer "Mina Azadparast" has generalized Iranian men as criminal, abusive, sodomizing and psychopathic. This general accusation raises a red flag, which signals not only a one sided story but also a misguided analysis of people's behavior. Or in my humble opinion: the story is trying to play to people's sentiments for an objective other than altruistic "Darse ebrat", the subject of "Darse ebrat" is trying hard to show a dehumanized image of Iranian men who have chosen to reside outside of Iran.

Among the inconsistencies, it is very interesting that the "victim" is rescued by no one other than an Iranian woman of Armenian descent, who of course differentiates from an Iranian woman of indigenous descent in the sense that the former is prone to criminal, abusive, sodomizing and psychopathic acts, and is likely married to an Iranian man of Armenian descent who lacks the flaws! The objective of "Mina Azadparast" is beginning to clarify.

The objective is clear. The writer "Mina Azadparast" is not real. "Mina Azadparast" is another concoction to spread fear among Iranians as often witnessed in the past. As we know brothels have thrived in Iran in the past years and the sex trade is presumably a major industry in Iran, in addition to the brothels of Iran, wife beating, sodomizing and psychopathic behavior is perfectly legal. Should we be looking at wife killing statistics of Iran?

Courage to come forward

On Mina Azadparast article about marrying off young Iranian girls to men living abroad, "Darse ebrat":

God what a compelling and heart breaking story. I cried so hard and wished I knew the man and would arrange for giving him a beating he would never forget and I would personally take part in beating him senseless.

I am always angry at the parents who think juts because the potential groom is Western educated that means he is a civilized person. They never ponder for a second why this great catch could not find someone in the area where he lives considering there are so many single Iranian women everywhere.

I admire and am proud of the lady who came to her rescue because I know many of us do not have the courage to even acknowledge that someone we know may be a woman beater.

A few years back I came across a tall and attractive Iranian woman who took advantage of a few minutes her husband was away playing volleyball to tell me she was being beaten. I had only met the man for a few minutes in a park. I asked for her number and what would be best time to call her. I explained that my phone number was in a different area code and would show up on their phone bill and I also explained that I would use a phone card instead of calling direct so their caller ID would not show my number and he would assume that an out of town marketing company had called when he saw no number on the caller ID.

I was so outraged I had to walk away in order not to attack him.

I called her and what she told me was horrible and the worst part was her two brothers living in the same town knew about the bearing but told her repeatedly that she had to stay. He had never let her have a bank account or to be on any account. She was not allowed to go out (did not have a car even though she had gotten driver's license in Iran) and she was not allowed to have any friends or talk to anyone without his permission. He beat her up in front of the kids which she tolerated but he had begun to beat on the kids which is why she was concerned and now found the courage to tell me.

I was furious when she told me that two years before another Iranian (a Lesbian who always asks what we are doing for women) had found out about the situation but did not want a confrontation and had kept it to herself!

We called the girl's mother (in Iran) a vivacious and smart lady who was petite yet fearless. She had closed her beauty salon in the city she lived in and flew to the US. She took her battered daughter and her two children to a shelter for battered women and later we found the daughter a job at a clothing store as a clerk and she began attending school at night. We all pulled together by using the mother's talents and experience as a hairdresser by going to the small apartment and paying her cash. The court granted the mother custody with weekend visitation. Even though we made sure the stupid judge knew he had beaten and abused the kids the judge felt he had the right to see his children. Well, you guessed it right. He took the kids to Iran and nobody knows where to.

The battered woman used her earned freedom the right way and attended school and became a computer technician and moved to California where she met a great Iranian man and she is happily married but the ordeal taught her to be independent and learn about all the resources.

She was one of the fortunate ones beastie her brave mother left everything in Iran to come and help her daughter but there are many who keep silent.

We have a moral obligation to all human beings especially our Iranian sisters. Please pay attention to the women behavior when you are among Iranians. If she acts frightened and constantly looks at her husband that is a clue that she is afraid of him. Play it reverse and talk to the husband. Find out what he does and you may be able to pretend that you or people you know could use his services. If you are good communicator you will be able to gain his trust and soon he will say something or do something that will confirm your suspicions.

I know an Iranian man whom everyone thinks is a model citizen. He is charming, cultured and knows all the right Persian expressions to come across politically correct. He used to bring his wife to some events but despite her beautiful appearance and eloquence there was a sense of uneasiness about her.

The man is into {Persian history and music so I began to have small conversation about those subjects to make him feel he had someone who shared his interest and after a short time he said something derogatory about his wife which I let it slide. The wife had said from the beginning that she liked me before we even met and her reasons where her own and not necessarily the truth but I was glad that she knew I was trustworthy. I had spoken to the wife a few times in gathering and once I gave her the toll free number (where I worked then and my boss did not mind my speaking Farsi because we did have some Iranian clients) to call me and calmly said that I knew he beat her.

She called me and opened up about the truth. She could not leave because she had two small kids by him and two teenagers from a previous marriage in Iran and she had brought them here and wanted to give them a better life. Staying with this man was the key to the kid's success (they have finished college now and have their own lives). I did not play the politically correct Iranian and simply told the guy I knew what was going on and if it did not stop I would expose him to the community (and everyone would believe me since everyone knows I tell the truth). I threatened that I would make sure the wife gets full custody. He stopped the physical abuse and now periodically resorts to sarcastic verbal comments which she ignores and laughs it off.

I also know of an Iranian older woman whom everyone used to refer to as an exemplary woman who had raised successful kids. Nobody would have ever guessed that not only she condoned her older son's beating of his wife at times she had joined in.

Again the battered wife reveled to a few of us and we helped her by getting her a job first in a dry cleaning place and later at a department store. Never mind that no good S.O.B. later came and apologized and asked her forgiveness. She never went back and now is a manager in a department store and loves her peaceful life. The mother-in law moved to California with the younger son and I have no doubt if you met her in person you would never believe that such sweet and eloquent lady is actually a monster.

It is my sincere hope that other women who are abused find the courage to reach out and I pray that we are all compassionate and brave enough to get involve and not fear backlash from the man or his family. Most domestic violence units in the United States are just interested in helping the victims and not finding out who exposed the case. I also pray that physicians in the emergency room do tryst their trainings as well as their intuitions and report signs of abuse even though the victim may claim that she had accidentally fallen or done it herself.

You may find this amusing but I am notorious for running into things because I am always rushed and I always find bruises which even surprised me however, I was impressed that a few of my friends pointed out those bruises and asked if I had a secret Iranian boyfriend who liked playing rough (they were not worried about the abuse because they now if a man ever dared to even threaten me would not live to regret it) and I had to remind them that I am the clumsy middle-aged woman who still knocks into things without looking. I was touched that they were so observant.

I hope the parents as well as the girls who think a man educated in America or Europe is decent simply because he has a degree do a bit of work and allow the man to spend sometime with their daughters because most often these men would involuntarily say something or react a certain way that may signal troubled behavior.

All of you Iranian sisters who dream about marrying an educated Iranian man and going abroad, please make sure you learn a profession in Iran and study the language of the country you plan to go to. Knowing the language and having survival skills will save your life. Knowing the language will enable you to reach out to someone and having any type of skill will help you to begin working and start a new life should you find out that you have married to one of these sick monsters.

Thank you for having the courage to come forward and share your horrible expeince and thank you to the lady who came to your rescue. Your story reminded me again not to take anything for granted and call my dad and thank him agian for having told me and my sisters since childhood to try and be educated and independent so we would only marry for love and if the partner turned out to be bad we could walk away and not stay because our survival depends on him.

I wish every Iranian father is as wise as my father and remembers to raise children who are aware and self-sufficient.

Cooperation with the women of Iran

On Golbarg Bashi's "Helping hand":

I like Ms. Golbarg Bashi's article and I couldn't agree more with her position regarding the need for a wider cooperation with the women of Iran including non seculars. It is by engaging the collective effort of all Iranian women that their situation can progress both in relation to their Islamic neighbours as well as within the country. I believe that Shirine Ebadi is striving in that direction however it is not without difficulty.

As for racism which exists in Iran as everywhere it is a plague that has to be fought against at all costs. However it is not Ahmaninejad's comments on Israel or the Holocaust or his suddne visions of a Holy Light during his unmemorable speacj in the United Nations or even the current policies of the IRI that will help move in that direction.

Couldn't agree more with Ms. Golbarg Bashi's quoting Sa'adi's famous poem which I believe in also in front of the UN building in NY, all the more that my Father was from Shiraz.

Nothing but an afterthought?

I am a Baha'i who lives in the U.S. and recently had the opportunity to read an article of yours from July 2002. Wow! I am not used to reading articles like yours. Although it seems you attempt to be fair-minded, at the same time it seemed that the article was a bother even just to write it.

Your internet was down. You were bored. So you wrote about a group of people that you say "have no rights whatsoever"; who you aknowledge have been persecuted, excluded and descriminated against, and systemically dehumanized. How can these sufferings be nothing but an afterthought? Were you embarassed to show that you really cared? Because when reading your article I felt that you did care.

You said, "I can't make heads or tales out of the Bahai faith or religion or whatever they call it. But what's the difference between that and Islam and Judaism, or Christianity, or I don't know... Hinduism or any other faith? Who's to say which one is more authentic? "

You have adressed one of our major concepts without even realizing it. We believe all these religions are authentic. All are correct. We believe that the only differences between them are that the social laws change according to the current needs of humanity. The spiritual laws do not change. An example of a spiritual law is the golden rule, which exists in all major world religions.

Can I give a quick summary? The Baha'i faith was founded by Baha'u'llah. It revolves around the concept of unity. Baha'is believe in the oneness of God (same God no matter what religion), oneness of mankind (the races are equal, the sexes are equal) and the oneness of relgion (all religions are one). We have an international web site that anyone writing an article about us should at least glance at (if their internet is working, ha,ha). Thanks for writing about us. We definitly exist: bahai.org.

Will Canada be forthright?

I found Nakissa Sedaghat's article on "Polite Racism" very thoughtful and well researched. There has been continuing research and documentaries about the false promises given by Canada's immigration system. It is a fact that within the next twenty or so years in Canada, there will be a large shortage of people for jobs from the professional industry such as medicine to blue collar jobs such as transportation and construction. There has been a decline in Canada's birth-rate since 1972 but jobs in our workforce have been steadily increasing without people to fulfill all those positions. Thus Canada will be forced to further open up their borders to allow more immigrants to fulfill these demands. But here lies the problem, will Canada be forthright to people who apply?

More than twenty years ago, Canada had a very ethnocentric policy of bringing doctors, engineers, teachers who were educated in other countries into Canada with the false promise of them being able to practice here only to be told that they would have to go back to University here and start all over again. In effect thereby consigning these people to manual labour jobs because when you start a new life in a new country you have bills to pay, a family to take care of, who has time and money to go back and take over a course that they spent many years studying in a University abroad. This policy has not changed by much in the year 2005, we have skilled foreign doctors not being able to practice, even though we have a shortage of 2,000 medical doctors in the Ontario region alone. This practice does not make sense and is having a negative effect on all Canadians.

As a University student myself, I would be devastated if I moved to a new country and found out that all those years of educating myself to become a professional would not be accepted simply because I went to a University that was not in their country. And let's be honest, math is math, no matter where you studied. So simply, it comes down to Canada wanting people to fulfill their needs for cheap labour, which is fine, since Canada has the right to pursue their own best interest but they need to be honest about their policies and not create false hopes for people seeking to prosper in Canada.

As for Brock MacLean's response to her article, I found it very uninformed. He refused to do any research to respond to her many arguments and simply provided one example, which happened to be his wife. First off, you need a collective example for it to actually be an effective study or sample for society. Secondly, I don't understand what his comment about the one or two Iranians in his building complex had anything to do with Sedaghat's article. All it showed was his apparent dislike for people of other cultures who are critical thinkers and shed light to injustice policies.

There are lazy people in every culture so what is his point? For his one example of Iranians being lazy, I can provide 30 examples of them being doctors, professors, lawyers, etc. Canada is a wonderful place, it is my home and I love many things about my country, however that does not mean we should not be critical of institutions that have unfair practices.

I concur with Mr. MacLean that for many immigrants who are illiterate and who have no opportunity back home, Canada does provide a wonderful haven for them to re-build their lives successfully. However, we can not ignore the many educated immigrants who have a difficult time coming into Canada and then are mislead to believe that they can practice in their field. As for his comment about the many millions of immigrants who are on welfare, Mr. MacLean has no basis for this argument since very little statistical research has been done to determine how many immigrants are actually on welfare. In fact, Don Devoretz, an economist from Simon Fraser University did statistical research that demonstrated the average immigrant family during a lifetime gives more than $20,000 in taxes than they use in social services.

Furthermore, the Council of Canada did a study that found immigrants are less dependent on social assistance than native-born Canadians. Thus, we can choose to educate ourselves and better our institutions like Ms. Sedaghat does or we can simply ignore it and insult people who dare to make a difference as Mr. MacLean demonstrates in his response. But I guess we cannot blame him, for ignorance can be bliss for those who choose it.

Azam Nemati seems to be projecting all sorts of false things into what I write [see: "Subtle differneces"]. Either she doesn't understand English well, or doesn't want to comprehend what I write. And what does her not being married have anything to do with my stories or essays?

She sounds like a very defensive, rude person. If she wants to say something sensible, her rudeness and preachiness only takes away from the point she is hoping to make.

When you're really in trouble

On "Sheep dog cries for Imam Reza" in Anyway section:

Q: How do you know when you're in really really big trouble?
A: When your best friend is crying.

The real question is how will this obvious act of God be "interpreted" by the wonderful (as in full of wonder) religious leadership this time.

Let's see, we have a "Heyvooneh Haram va Najess" obviously repentant for his sins as an unclean animal. You could play the angle of the power of the shrine to get even najess animals such as this dog, to desperately want to become clean again. That would work.

Or is he possibly a man from the afterlife, sent back to live out his past life sins as a dog, and now wants to be forgiven?

But can a "Haram" animal be forgiven according to the qoran, even if it proves itself repentant as this fellow obviously has?

Or is he merely another "sag koochehie" who like Wile E. Coyote is just trying to weasel his way in the door to get some water afraid because each time he has tried before, he has been beaten senselessly, and that's the real reason he is crying now? He knows what is about to happen.

So many possibilities to consider! Ah the wonder that is God! What a scam!

PS: Actually I was thinking just before I send this, that if I was at the shrine, I would probably be weeping too. I guess dogs really are man's best friend, because only a true friend would cry for your plight.

Win-win situation -- for Canada

On Brock MacLean's letter, "Canada is incredibly generous to these people":

Mr. MacLean:

Although I share your sentiments about the fact that many people in the world love to come to Canada to grasp the taste of freedom and better life as well as your disagreement on the faith of the Filipinos, yet I was disappointed that you ended your letter with the same type of characterization that you were criticizing to begin with.

You may live among a few Iranians that seemingly do not contribute to what you called "their new home", but trust me, I can give you a list of Iranians in Canada that are basically indispensable in that country in the area of science, business and social sciences and many other fields.

The same goes on in USA where you cannot go a 100 miles in this country without finding at least one very influential, educated and contributor Iranian to the progress of this country. Iranians are among the most highly educated and influential of all minorities both in USA and Canada. Please do not allow your judgment be clouded with a few examples around you.

Finally, Canada is simply a vast land with not enough human resources. They are attracting talents just like US did in early 20th century. The great "Brain Drain" that goes on in US, Canada and Australia rubs nations out of their most needed talents. Jealous of Jews

On Javid Kahen's "I was just a child":

I don't have any religious belief of any kind, though my parents were non practicing Muslims, but I lost my faith in any religion or any god when I saw what happened to one of my Jewish classmates in Shiraz, pretty much similar to what happened to Javid's story. The only difference was that we were in a private all-girls school and long before "Revloution" and my friend got harassed during the whole school year by a few scarf-headeds.

And worst of all, other children or adults would find it normal and "OK" just because she was Jewish. I felt myself as in ghetto for being her friend and trying to protect her as an 8-year-old kid.

If you look at the list of the most important inventors and artists and scientists and... the ones who made a difference in history, you can clearly notice the great contribution of Jewish community. And if they are good in finances, I am sure it is also because of their great intelligence and the fact that they have learned to protect themselves from generation to generation. And their suffering has resulted in great art and artists (as a way of expressing their feelings of agony and sorrow.)

I think that all hatred and frustration against Jews, comes from pure jealousy and shortage of intellectual strength.

I am happy for Javid, to finally being able to live in a society where kids, no matter where they come from, can go to school and feel like everyone else...

What a difference 25 years or so can make

On Israel and Iran:

What a difference? 25 or so years ago when Khomeini for the first time in human history revealed the ugly face of Zionism and its EVIL plans, the world had just woken up. As a result of that statement, many Iranians in US or in other western countries were mis-treated. Many Iranians lost their jobs, or at least didn't get the promotion they deserved, because they were Iranians, and nothing else. The world then went up in arms against iran and iranians. Zionists were powerful then.

Today, after Iranian President uttered the same words, mainly because most powerful Zionists who were very old at that time are dead now, and for the most part due to the the problems all over the western governments (White House's scandles, weak british government, broke and out of commission Israeli terrorists, etc.) only some articles were written, some "expected" pronouncements were made, and for the most part except for the western media which are still controlled by the Zionists no one really cared.

In fact many around the globe support that position. The reason may be that by now the ugly face of Zionism is very well known to the world. Over the last 25 years, most people turning on their TVs and reading newspapers see the destruciton and savage acts of Zionists on a daily basis on the poor Palestinains, whose only crime is that they want their homes, land, and country back. So far, we haven't seen "the other shoe drop" against Iranians.

Utter discontentment at showing Iran bashing

I am writing this letter to express my utter discontentment with you for posting a video from "david letterman show" which shows the illiterate mind of a stupid American journalist bashing our country. He said that Iranian women were wearing burqas while playing badminton. He further stipulated that Iran is boring, and uttered some more disrespectful words about our culture/country.

We may not be content with the current regime, but we should not condone what an illiterate "red-neck" says about our culture. You have gone one step further by posting it on your website. Our discontnentment with the regime, our hatred for totalitarism should only be discussed amongst ourselves.

Canada is incredibly generous to these people

My reaction:

My Filipino wife came to Canada under the live-in-caregiver program, of the Canadian government, in 1986. She worked as a domestic for only 2 years, (with all the rights and priviledges and pay that Canadians have) and then was eligible to apply for landed immigrant status, and of course was accepted, and worked for 3 more years and then became a citizen.

She was incredibly lucky. She is still basically illiterate, yet a Canadian. Most of our Filipino-Canadian friends have "sponsored" thier aunts and sisters and other relatives, offering them bogus "jobs", and then when they arrive in Canada, they "release" them for some reason or another, and then they are able to find jobs here. It is a simple way fort them to come here.

Canada is incredibly generous to these people, and hardly can be characterized as you say to employ them for the benefit of the rich! Filipinos love this program! That is why so many come here under this program.

You twist the facts and the truth! Millions will lie and do what they can to come to this great land! You know it and I know it. Where else can you arrive on a boat, with no papers, and then receive welfare and a hotel to stay in? And then collect welfare for many years? Tell me where else? We even provide court interpreters for the ones charged for crimes.

Do not bite the hand that feeds you!!!! There is a reason why Canada was on the UN HUman DEVELOPMENT Index for 6 years straight. Iran is a basket-case, and you know it! I live in a co-op rental development and can see how Iranians do nothing to contribute to thier new home, yet fully take advantage of the CANADIAn social welfare system. Dont beleive me? Come for a visit and I will show you!

Persian was the language of high culture across much of the Eastern Islamic world. The Mughal court spoke and wrote in Persian but were locked in war with the Saffavids and would have skinned you alive if you had called them Persians. So Rumi culturally Persianate, certainly. Ethnically Persian- a more difficult question to answer. A Persian National? The term would have had no meaning then...

Thanks for your email! However, after reading your email, I got the feeling that you think that I am disconnected from my homeland. If so, that is not true! In fact, if you bother to read my other stories or even pay attention to the fact that I have a radio show called The Persian Hour, you would then get a better understanding of where I stand.

Interestingly, I have been doing this radio show as a volunteer for 20 months now. My goal has always been to introduce the Iranian culture and all the wonderful things that have come out of Iran. Although, I have a son, a full time job, and serve on different civil rights and human rights boards and commissions, I still manage to spend 10 to 15 hours a week developing this show. And how much do I get paid for all this? Zilch! I am a volunteer and I do it because I am proud of who I am and where I come from and I want to share it with the rest of America, as well as make it easier for my hamvatans in this country.

And if anybody deserves to complain, then it should be me. We just had our fund raising week for the radio station (it is a non-profit, commecial free station) and happily, I raised almost $1000 in pledges during my show from my listeners, but sadly, none were Iranians.

Lastly, your judgment of my character is also false. I am the sum of all my experiences!

In conclusion, if you want to make a change for the better, start within!

I thoroughly enjoyed Sara Nobari's feature Night Train to Tabriz. I have been fascinated by trains since I was a child. Mrs. Nobati's story was one of the best I have ever read on Iranian.com. It brought me a lot of memories from childhood in Iran, when my parents often traveled by train to satisfy me. (It's a three-hour drive from Tehran to Sari but my parents always acquiesce to the 10-hour trip by train to make me happy.)

As I read your story, I just pictured the old days traveling in Iranian trains, before and after this revolution. Thank you very much for the story, Mrs. Nobari.

Don't pay any attention to Azam Nemati [See: "Why do you even bother to go to Iran?"]. That letter of hers is just another manifestation of her unstable mind and her bitterness with life in general. Your story never put down Iranians or anyone; it just painted a picture for anyone who arrives to a new place. You did a great job sharing your experience with us. Nemati has never found acceptance in any society and uses this medium for her diatribes to make up for her own shortcomings.

Anti-Jewish impulse

I would like to say that in my believe this story is not only about Jews in Iran but about the way the Islamic regime is training the new generation so that it can easily brainwash and use them for it own political purposes.

A short while ago there was a report on one of Iranian Sattelite TV channels that was exactly the same as Javid's story. It was about the situation of Afghan children in Iran. There was this Afghan child, a first grader, who told the reporter how his teacher has told the other children about his being an afghan and after insulting him had encouraged other children to do so. He explained, with tears running down his eye, that the other kids didn't know he was an Afghan until the teacher told them so. He looked Iranian and spoke farsi. I wonder if those little kids even knew what it meant to be an Afghan.

Obviously in Iran today they are teaching children to act on impulses instead of being able to use their mind. this kind of programming has been happening in Iran for many years and I am happy that these brave people made this report. Although they may never show it in Iran. This kind of programming has been happening in Arab and Islamic countries for many years. We live in a time that many Arabs and Moslems are awakening to the kind of brainwashing they have been getting against Israel and Jews. (you can check Nonie Darwish's website: Arabsforisrael.com in which Arabs and Moslems from different countries write about their experiences) so please next time don't say proudly: I'm Persian, not Arab. add: I wish I was one.

Another story I remember is watching this guy on a live show on satellite TV, telling how when in Iran, during the early years of Islamic revolution, his younger brother was attacked by a baseej guy and killed. The guy insulted his brother and wanted to arrest him because he was wearing short sleeve shirts. He couldn't take it, fought and was shot on the spot. This guy had this cute Isfahani accent and reminded me of Isfahanis long history of harassing Jews. (even today at least in one girls' school that I heard about, they have separate bathroom for non-Moslems, because they are considered dirty) I called, and waited for my turn to speak.

I only wanted to say one thing: How come when the Mollas said Jews were Najes (dirty), you accepted their words like God's and didn't find it wrong to harass them but now that they are teaching your neighbor's kids to harass yours for not being as religious, you hate them? how come they are bad now? I kept waiting and fortunately when the program finished without this guy's answering my call, I felt released. It was too hard for me to blame him for anything while he was talking so sadly about his brother's death. And how did I know he was just like the rest of the people of his city?

Then this other report about the family of the man who killed 13 prostitutes in the city of Mashad. He was one of the people who had fought in the war and a real Hizbollahi. One part was very interesting, the reporter went to the house of this man and asked his 12 year old son if he knew how his father had killed the women. The boy showed the reporter, exactly where in the room and with what kind of rope he had killed them. It seemed the father had shown his son how to kill bad people and the boy went on to say that if the government doesn't want to clean the city of bad people, Moslems should do it themselves.

Unfortunately, these same programmed children have grown up to become the adults who register in the streets of Iran to become suicide bombers, with fixed political ideas that can hardly be considered logical. They are ready to attack without thinking. Just like the people who killed the poor Journalist, Daniel Pearl, while he unknowingly used the trigger word, I'm Jewish. He probably only wanted to help these people but didn't know they were programmed to attack when they hear certain words. I'm afraid the next trigger words for these kind of brainwashed people will be: I'm a human being.

One last thing, about Javid's writing in an answer to someone: They (Jews) think they are better. This is normal that sometimes when people feel totally helpless, they blame themselves and their own people for what is happening to them and get to a point that they believe any anti-Jewish propaganda. I won't blame him but I wish to remind those who believe we Jews think we are better, this is one of the lies made by Neo-Nazis and some Arab governments so that they can justify their racism. Just one of many lies. I don't have to explain it. You can think about it yourself.

I wanted to know why the site of the Constitutionalist Party of Iran hasn't a section (at least) in English.

If you go to the Mojaheddin sites (ncr-iran.org or mojahedin.org), you see they have links in English, in French, in German, in Arab, in Kurdish and in Italian. They even have four sites only in French ( 17juin.org or iranmanif.org or csdhi.org or iran-resist.org).

They give daily news in French and in English (iranfocus.com or iranterror.com). Even the Communists (wpiran.org ) have an English, a German, a Swedish and a Turkish sections. The writings of their leader (Mansoor Hekmat) is translated in English, in German, in Swedish, in French, in Russian, in Turkish, in Arab, in Kurdish, in Italian, in Danish, in Catalan, etc. You can see that in m-hekmat.com.

I feel really disappointed that you are not even capable of informing the non-Iranians or the English-speaking Iranians of what you want for Iran, your daily actions, etc. You are the only opposition group to have a representation in Israel, it would be interesting to know if it is really useful, if you meet the members of the Knesset.

By the way, every week, I see that Maryam Rajavi (despite belonging to a "terrorist" organization and the many problems she is facing in Iraq) is able to speak at the European Parliament or the British Parliament (you can see the videos in ncr-iran.org). I live in Paris and last week they organized a conference on the women's situation in Iran. Why are they more capable than you ? Can't you at least have a site with an English section ? Is the CPI a doomed Party ?

She peered out the window. Everything was so different than where she grew up. The street below was overrun with the crowd -- mostly young people. They gathered in small circles, passionately discussing issues among themselves. Some held signs, waving them furiously in the air. Heads moved back and forth and hands cut the air like knives. She had never seen people that angry -- what could have made so many people so angry?

She could not read Farsi but recognized the curved letters with dots in their bellies like pregnant women with triplets. Letters with mouths half open, hungry enough to swallow the character sitting silently next to them. The sharp blades of other characters like the sickles peasants used to harvest, the letters she had seen in books her father read.

The warning from the Center for National Security and Public Safety, on the radio this morning echoed in her head, "Any gathering of three or more persons on streets is prohibited and illegal. Perpetrators will be arrested." She could not imagine the number of buses required to haul all these felons to jail. If people back in America took to the streets so passionately like this, obesity would not be an issue. She grined.

She sipped the hot Darjeeling tea her BeeBee, grandmother -- whom she'd never met before today -- had prepared for her. The young woman wasn't sure if her shakiness resulted from jet lag or the crowd of cousins, aunts, and uncles vying for their first glimpse of her. On this, her first trip to her motherland she was overwhelmed by unending platters of food and constant kisses blanketing her cheeks and forehead. Her nostrils burned from espand, the scented seed, grilled to prevent the evil eye.

Her mobile phone rang out the first few bars of "Yankee Doodle". This was the first time it rang in the three days since she left America. Enthusiastically, she pushed the talk button, "Hello?"

"Hello. My name is Peter Burton from Prudential Insurance. I hope my call has not disturbed you? "

"Not at all. How interesting. I am thousands of miles away from home. I can't believe I am receiving calls from America. What can I do for you?"

"It's amazing how connected we are in the world."

Outside, a uniformed officer snatched the pamphlets from a young man's hands and threw them in a ditch. His actions agitated the crowd around him.

"I am calling to offer you the best life insurance at the lowest premium."

A second officer approached the same young man from behind and quickly pounded him to the ground with the butt of his gun.

"All you pay is a few dollars a month and we insure your life for $250,000."

The young man coiled in agony. An old woman stood a few feet from the scene, watching them with her trembling hands clamped over her mouth.

"I need to ask you a few simple questions just to fill out the forms."

A shot cracked the air. The crowd scattered in fear.

"Are you between 18 and 25?"

A line of soldiers flooded out of a military vehicle and took positions on the both sides of the street. Their helmets reflected the sharp rays of light into her eyes.

"Yes."

A running woman tripped as she was escaping the chaos. Her scarf fell to the sidewalk. Now she had broken the law by not wearing her hejab in public. She knelt to retrieve it, but the explosion convinced her otherwise. She ran leaving her scarf and her right shoe behind to disappear under the feet of others.

"Are you currently a full time student?"

"Any demonstration is considered a threat to national security and perpetrators will be severely punished," the words echoed in her ears.

"Yes."

The armed forces surrounded two young demonstrators. As others rushed to their rescue, the soldiers shoved them away. A military Jeep approached the circle and the uniformed officers wrestled the two men and a woman in their early twenties into the vehicle.

"You don't smoke, do you?"

"No." She shifted her glance from out the window to her sweating palm. She found herself wishing she did smoke.

Another Jeep plowed through the crowd. Soldiers leaped out taking positions on the sides of the street; their guns aimed at demonstrators.

"By not smoking, you have done yourself two favors. First you haven't shortened your life. Second, you have drastically reduced your premium."

She squinted through the window and noticed a soldier on the roof across the street aiming. She could hear her heart pounding. A young-looking woman, one who looked quite like herself, wandered around confused, lost in the crowd. More shots echoed across the buildings. People scattered. Some crowded into a sandwich shop, a few rushed into a bakery. Others ducked behind cars.

Apparently, everyone else knew what to do in a chaotic situation, but the young girls. Neither the girl in the street nor the one behind the window knew what to do, or even where she was. They didn't understand the chaos, strangers lost in the pandemonium.

Another shot was fired.

"You are in prime of your life."

She collapsed. Everything turned gray except the growing red spot on the front of her shirt.

"Congratulations! You are qualified for the lowest cost life insurance."

The young girl touched her heart; she now was drenched in blood.

Britney Spears sued Us Weekly for libel on Monday, accusing the magazine of fabricating a story that she and her husband made a sexually explicit video together and worried it might be made public.

The suit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court by Spears and her spouse, dancer Kevin Federline, seeks $10 million in damages against the magazine over the story, which ran in the publication's "HOTstuff" column in October.

According to the suit, the item was published with the headline: "Brit & Kev: Secret Sex Tape? New parents have a new worry: racy footage from 2004."

The magazine reported the couple telling their lawyers that "a member of their entourage had threatened to release raunchy footage of the two" and that Spears feared that "an X-rated tape starring the two may go public," the suit said.

The magazine also reported that the couple gave a copy of the tape to lawyers and watched it with them. The article appeared about a month after Spears, 24, gave birth to her first child. She and Federline, 27, married in September of last year.

Spears' complaint asserts that the entire story is false -- there is no such X-rated tape, no member of her entourage had threatened to release any such video and no such video was shown to the couple's lawyers.

The suit goes on to say that Us Weekly has refused to retract the article and "is instead maliciously standing by the bogus story."

A spokeswoman for Us Weekly had no immediate comment about the lawsuit.

Spears' lawyer, Martin Singer, was quoted telling Web site TMZ.com, which first reported news of the suit, that "Britney has finally decided to take a stand to put a stop to people fabricating these malicious lies about her."

Spears has sold more than 60 million albums since she shot to fame with her 1999 debut, "... Baby One More Time."

Earlier this year, UPN broadcast a reality-show mini-series about Spears' courtship and marriage to Federline, based largely on home videos shot by the singer herself.

NEW YORK -- A New York fashion writer accused of breaking into a woman's apartment on Halloween while disguised as a firefighter and sexually abusing her for hours was returned from Tennessee on Monday night to face criminal charges in the attack.

A handcuffed Peter Braunstein, who was captured on the University of Memphis campus last week after six weeks on the run, was taken into a New York police station at about 10 p.m. He appeared exhausted and confused and refused to answer questions.

Braunstein, 41, had appeared without a lawyer earlier in the day at a brief court hearing in Memphis and agreed not to fight extradition, Shelby County assistant prosecutor Tom Henderson said.

A court hearing had been set for Wednesday, but Judge Mischelle Alexander-Best agreed to hold it earlier at the request of authorities in Memphis and New York.

"The judge explained to him that he could have a hearing and stay here in jail until we had the hearing or he could go on back to New York and he decided to go on back to New York," Henderson said.

Braunstein would be arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court on Monday night or, more likely, Tuesday morning, Manhattan district attorney's office spokeswoman Barbara Thompson said. An arrest warrant charges him with sex abuse, kidnapping, robbery and burglary, she said.

Assistant District Attorney Maxine Rosenthal, the lead prosecutor, will present the case against Braunstein to the grand jury within the next day or two to try to have him indicted, Thompson said.

Braunstein, a freelance fashion writer for New York publications, was arrested Friday while walking across the University of Memphis campus. Authorities said he stabbed himself in the neck with a knife several times while being arrested, but Henderson said he showed no signs of serious injury or emotional distress.

He is accused of breaking into a New York woman's apartment on Halloween while dressed as a city firefighter. Authorities say the woman was overpowered, tied up and sexually assaulted for up to 12 hours.

The attack drew heavy media coverage in New York, and Braunstein was featured on the national TV show "America's Most Wanted."

The first university police officer at the scene of Friday's arrest, Jay Johnson, said Braunstein stabbed himself in the neck when stopped for questioning.

Johnson described the knife as a three-inch, double-edged blade and a grip designed for jabbing rather than slicing. The officer said he drew his .40-caliber service pistol and sprayed Braunstein with pepper spray to get him to drop the knife.

"He never flinched," Johnson said Monday. "Even though he was sticking himself with the knife, he never changed his expression."

But the pepper spray eventually took its toll, Johnson said, and he and other officers got Braunstein on the ground and handcuffed him. An ambulance took him to a hospital where he was initially reported in critical condition.

No one else was hurt during the arrest.

Braunstein was spotted by Annette Brown, a university office worker and part-time student who recognized him from TV reports.

Brown said she was standing on a campus sidewalk talking with her sister on a cell phone when he walked slowly past.

"When he looked up, I realized this is the guy I'd been seeing on `America's Most Wanted,' a wanted fugitive," said Brown, who flagged down a police cruiser. "The moment seemed like it lasted for a long time. I was trying to keep my head about me, although inside I was screaming."

Un magazine quotidien d'actu internationale, un hebdo sportif et des cases consacrées à l'art de vivre, à la jeunesse ou à l'Afrique.
Dès le 2 janvier 2006 sur TV 5 Monde.

CORRESPONDANTE À PARIS

Comme annoncé en septembre dernier par son PDG Jean-Jacques Aillagon, la chaîne francophone TV 5 a refondu ses grilles de programmes pour la rentrée de 2006. «Des grilles stabilisées, à horaires fixes, lisibles, fidélisantes» , adaptées aux sept réseaux (France-Belgique-Suisse, Europe, Afrique, Orient, Asie, Amérique latine et Etats-Unis) de la chaîne francophone. Pour marquer ce renouveau, la chaîne s'appellera désormais TV 5 Monde (nom de la société éditrice) et se dotera d'un nouvel habillage dès le 2 janvier prochain.

Toujours l'un des piliers de l'offre, l'information sera diffusée à heure fixe, avec entre 18 et 20 rendez-vous par jour. La grande nouveauté, que nous avions déjà évoquée dans nos pages, c'est ce magazine quotidien (21h05-22h) d'actualité internationale, «Un jour dans le monde», produit par TV 5 Monde et présenté en direct sur tous les signaux du réseau par Estelle Martin (ex-présentatrice du «Journal des bonnes nouvelles» sur Canal+). Elle sera entourée d'une dizaine de chroniqueurs, dont Henry Chapier qui donnera ses coups de coeur et coups de gueule. Tous les secteurs de l'info seront abordés, de la politique à la gastronomie, en passant par la langue française.

Un autre magazine d'information, en français simplifié et à visée pédagogique, «7 jours sur la planète», sera lancé le samedi à 8h30. Quant au «Grand rendez-vous Europe1-TV 5 Monde» (le dimanche, 18h30), il accueille un nouveau partenaire: «Le Parisien».

Nouveaux visages

D'autres visages viennent enrichir la chaîne: Alexandre Debanne animera «Terre de sports» (le samedi, 17h30-18h), une découverte des sports sous un angle culturel. TV 5 Monde reprendra «Jour de rugby» (Canal+), présenté par Eric Bayle. Et Sébastien Folin s'occupera d'«Acoustic» (le dimanche, 16h35). Figure plus familière de TV 5, Elisabeth Tchoungui présentera une nouvelle formule de l'émission «24 heures à...» en commençant les 18 et 19 mars 2006 par la ville de Los Angeles (suivront Marseille, Séoul et Liège).

Afin de réaffirmer encore un peu plus son statut de chaîne généraliste, TV 5 Monde ouvre des cases destinées à la jeunesse, le week-end dès 6h30, avec «Bonjour Madame Croque-Cerise», une série de Télé-Québec, «Petit vampire»... Elle élargit en outre sa thématique fiction avec un format quotidien de 26 minutes, qui nous permettra de découvrir à 19h30 des séries francophones comme la version québécoise originale d'«Un gars, une fille». Et chaque jour, de nouvelles cases seront dédiées dès 7h35 à la maison, au jardin, à la cuisine et au tourisme, avec des magazines des chaînes partenaires comme «Jardins et loisirs», «Une brique dans le ventre», «Escapade gourmande» et «Télétourisme», autant de productions émanant de la RTBF.

Intérêt pour l'Afrique

Jean-Jacques Aillagon a également décidé de diffuser chaque jour un documentaire de 52 minutes (horaires divers) et de poursuivre sa politique de séries documentaires de 13 minutes. Par ailleurs, une place plus importante sera faite à l'Afrique, avec une quotidienne à 6h30 consacrée à différents programmes qui viennent s'ajouter au «Journal africain» (00h30). Une fois par mois sera diffusé un film de cinéma africain. Et courant 2006, un deuxième signal devrait voir le jour en Afrique.

Un effort sera fourni, enfin, sur le sous-titrage des productions de langue française, de quoi accroître l'audience (fois 4,5 en moyenne pour une fiction) en zone de diffusion non francophone.

Il y a 25 ans: la mort violente de John Lennon

Le 8 décembre 1980, il y a un quart de siècle, John Lennon était abattu devant son domicile à New York. L'homme qui avait été un des Beatles, dont le talent et la personnalité complexe en avaient fait un des artistes et musiciens les plus connus et les plus controversés de son temps, entrait dans la légende.

Né à Liverpool en Angleterre le 9 octobre 1940, le jeune John Lennon est passionné de rock and roll. Durant les années 50, il forme son premier groupe, les Quarrymen.

Le groupe change de nom, devenant les Silver Beatles, puis les Beatles. Il se produit dans une taverne à Hambourg, en Allemagne. Les temps sont durs.

La gloire


	A Hambourg, les Beatles avaient fait leurs premières armes

Ce n'est qu'à leur retour en Angleterre que la gloire sourit enfin aux Beatles, avec des "tubes" tels que "Love me do" ou "I want to hold your hand".

En 1964, les quatre jeunes gens font leur première tournée aux Etats Unis, jouant notamment dans une émission télévisée à grande audience, le Ed Sullivan show.

John Lennon, qui, avec Paul Mac Cartney, est l'auteur de la plupart de leurs chansons, est marié. En 1962, en effet, il épouse Cynthia Powell, qu'il a rencontrée alors qu'ils étaient tous deux étudiants. Ils ont un fils, Julian, devenu aujourd'hui musicien à son tour . Mais John et Cynthia divorcent en 1968.

Evolution

Le style des Beatles évolue constamment. Durant l'explosion culturelle des années 60, ils passent du rock au folk, puis leur musique devient psychédélique.

Les membres du groupe, tout en continuant de participer à l'aventure, commencent parfois à faire cavalier seul. John, qui a une nouvelle petite amie, Yoko Ono, enregistre un album ( "Two virgins") avec elle, et sans ses trois amis, en 1968.

Il prend de plus en plus position en public sur des questions politiques, notamment en faveur de la paix , et joint sa voix à ceux qui s'opposent à la guerre du Vietnam.

Le rêve est fini


	John et Yoko, quelques jours avant la mort du chanteur

Les relations entre les quatre Beatles, et notamment entre John et Paul, deviennent de plus en plus tendues. En 1970, ils se séparent. En 1971, John chante "le rêve est fini"...

Les quatre poursuivent leurs carrières séparément, John Lennon avec le Plastic Ono Band, puis en solo, et avec Yoko. Il vit à New York.

C'est là, devant l'immeuble où il habite, qu'il est abattu le 8 décembre 1980 par Mark Chapman.

هفته پیش مسابقات دختر شایسته کانادا به مرحله نهائی رسید و رامونا امیری، دختر ایرانی 25 ساله فارغ التحصیل دانشگاه بریتیش کلمبیا ، برای شرکت در مسابقه دختر شایسته جهان که در چین برگزار می شه، انتخاب شد.

رامونا بر همه رقیبان خودش پیروز شد و برای دومین بار یک دختر ایرانی الاصل این مقام رو به دست آورد.

رامونا به زبانهای انگلیسی، فرانسه و آسوری صحبت می‌کنه و تصمیم داره که تحصیلات خودش را ادامه بده تا مثل مادرش متختصص پوست بشه ولی قبل از اون دوست داره که به عنوان "مدل" کار خودش را دنبال کنه، دور دنیا سفر کنه و تجربه کسب کنه.

گفتگوی بهزاد با رامونا، دختر شايسته کانادا

رامونا اهل مطالعه، آشپزی، موتور سواری و رقص عربی هست. بعد از مدتها جستجو، بالاخره تونستیم که تلفنی با رامونا صحبت کنیم و بیشتر با خودش آشنا بشیم.

بهزاد : چطوری خودتو برای این مسابقه آماده کردی؟

رامونا امیری: برای آماده شدن، ورزش می‌کردم ولی برای سوالها زیاد تمرین نکرده بودم چون میدونستم اگر زیادی تمرين کنم عصبی می‌شم و این خودش یک نقطه ضعفه و به ضررم تموم می‌شه.

اصلا از قبل بهتون میگن که چه سوالهایی می پرسن؟

نه اصلا، سعی می‌کنن غافلگیر کنن که برای مسابقات بعدی بتونیم حاضرجواب باشیم.

حالا چیکار می کنی؟ درس می خونی؟

چهار سال پیش درسم تموم شد. لیسانس گرفتم. لیسانس زیست شناسی.

سوال درسی که ازت نپرسیدن؟!

نه فقط درباره آینده ازم پرسیدن و اینکه می خواهم چه رشته ای رو ادامه بدم، من هم می خوام مثل مادرم پزشکی بخونم چون 4 سال تو مطبشون کار کردم و فهمیدم چقدر این کار رو دوست دارم. در ضمن فارسیم هم، اونجا بهتر شد!

چه ورزشهايی دوست داری؟

موتورسواری خیلی دوست دارم و تازه لیسانسش رو هم گرفتم.

مگه موتور، لیسانس هم داره؟!

نه منظورم همون گواهینامه است.

باید بیشتر فارسی تمرین کنی ولی خوب می دونم که زیاد هم مقصر نیستی چونکه در شهری بدنیا آمدی که زبان اصلیش فرانسه و بعد انگلیسی بوده.

من 25 سالمه و زبان های انگلیسی و فرانسه را هم بلدم و چون درمونترال به دنیا اومدم باید زبان فرانسه را هم حتما یاد می گرفتم و دبیرستانم رو هم با زبان فرانسه تموم کردم. ولی خوب مادرم با من فارسی حرف می زنه. در ضمن چون پدرم آسوریه، زبان آسوری هم بلدم.

مسابقه دخترشایسته چقدر طول کشید و چقدر هیجان داشتی؟

دو روز بود، اولین شب فقط با مایو و لباس شب بايد راه می رفتیم، بعد یک مصاحبه هم داشتیم با داورها که با هر کدوممون جداگانه انجام دادن. سوال مهمی که از من پرسیدن این بود که سرمشق کانادایی من چه شخصیتیه؟ منم گفتم یکی از نخست وزیرهای قبلی کانادا "پیر ترودو" چرا که مرد خوبی بود و به حقوق زنها اهمیت می داد و کارهای مثبت زیادی برای کانادا انجام داد.

در این شب، از سی تا دختر 15 دختر رو انتخاب کردن. و بعد پنج نفر نهائی که من از بین همه‌شون برنده شدم.

آیا تو این برنامه از ایرانی بودن خودت هم حرفی میزنی؟

از این 5 نفر شب آخر، داور همیشه یک سوال مخصوص می‌پرسه که اگر روزی بشه قانون ومحدودیتی نباشه چیکار میکنی. تو چی جواب دادی؟

گفتم دوست دارم برگردم ایران تا فرهنگم و تاریخم را دوباره کشف کنم.

تا حالا ایران رو دیدی؟

یکبار وقتی 12 سالم بود با مادرم رفتم، خیلی تجربه قشنگی بود و دوست دارم یک روزی برگردم. فقط باید پاسپورت ایرانیم درست بشه، بعد.

مسابقه بعدی جهانی چه وقتی برگزار می شه؟ و تو برای آماده گی چکار میکنی؟

ماه آذر توی چین برگزار می شه، و از حالا دیگه ورزشهام رو شروع می کنم و مطالعه می کنم. بخصوص باید راه رفتنم رو درست کنم و قشنگتر راه برم.

دختر شایسته باید به هنر آشپزی هم وارد باشه! تو چه غذایی بلدی درست کنی؟

دارم یاد می‌گیرم که چطوری غذای ایرانی درست کنم و غذاهای آسوری هم بلدم و کلا همه غذاها رو دوست‌ دارم، بخصوص خورشت بامیه رو!

شعارت تو زندگی چیه؟

عاشق شو انگار که هیچوقت دلت نشکسته! کارکن انگار که محتاج پول نیستی! و جوری برقص که انگار هیچکس نگاهت نمی کنه!

واقعا فکر می کنی باید جوری کار کرد که انگار به پولش احتیاج نداری؟

آره چون نصف از زندگی آدم صرف کار می شه و اگر عاشق کارت نباشی و بیشتر دنبال پول درآوردنش باشی، زندگیت سیاه می شه.

در مورد رقصم گفتی. حالا بگو چه آهنگهایی دوست داری. به چه چیزی گوش میکنی و این که در کلکسیون موسیقیت چی ها داری؟

بیشتر عربی، ولی همه خواننده ها رو دوست دارم از ایرانی ها هم منصور فقط. منصورآهنگ. یکبار هم رفتم ونکوور کنسرتش رو دیدم.

درعشق وعاشقی هم حتما قلبت قبلا شکسته؟
